The Agricultural Hybrid Energy System was developed for a large-scale agricultural facility in Singapore with integrated solar and bioenergy solutions that create a sustainable and resilient power supply. The system incorporates solar PV panels of 15MW with a 5MW bioenergy digester that converts organic waste from the farm into energy. This hybrid approach keeps the facility supplied with firm and renewable energy, further reducing the reliance on non-renewable sources of energy and further greening the agricultural process. Excess energy is stored in the 40MWh battery storage system to that end, enabling the facility to manage energy demands effectively and sustain its operations even on occasions of low sunlight or bioenergy production. The annual yield of 75,000 MWh contributes to drastically reducing the carbon footprint from agricultural operations, therefore setting a milestone in the achievement of farming sustainability.
Materials and technology chosen for the Agricultural Hybrid Energy System needed to be highly efficient and durable to support an agricultural setting. We collaborated with popular suppliers within the solar and bioenergy industries to make this one-of-a-kind solution a reality.
The Hybrid Energy System for Agriculture was completed in March 2023, where all components were duly integrated and operational. In fact, the system not only achieved targets concerning energy generation and carbon reduction but also proved to be a reliable and sustainable source of energy for the agricultural facility. It has thus attracted the interest of the agricultural and renewable energy sectors due to its novelty in the integration of solar and bioenergy. The farm, therefore, enjoys a regular supply of energy, coupled with reduced energy costs and a carbon footprint that is far lower, and thus a case for hybrid energy systems in agriculture. This project will serve as a model for other farm operations in the quest for sustainability and efficiency in energy utilization and is likely to catalyze more similar projects throughout Singapore and beyond.
